It is a way to promote music to movie fans. another way for record company to make more money. It doesn't have to be exactly about the movie. That's the truth no one will tell you. not even the press. because record companies pay them.

in alot of movies alot of the songs on th soundtrack can be faintly heard in the background of certain scenes but most people don't hear it because they're focusing on whats actually going on in the move, also sometimes they'll play parts of songs on the soundtrack as the end credits are rolling not alot of people sit through the full credits so they don't usually hear them. and then there are the songs like the other people above mentiondd that are inspired by the the move. hope this helps

If you look at the case to a soundtrack, it usually says "music INSPIRED BY *insert random movie here*"
Hence the ideas for the music came from them seeing the movie.
