What grade are you teaching? Have you ever heard of The Survivor game? I taught math for both high school and middle school, but used the same technique to get the kids actively involved. I provided a link below, so that you can get more info. I could not find the original website I used, but this gentleman does a nice write up of how he uses it in his classroom.

I actually used Survivor throughout the entire quarter for my highschoolers (they are more competitive) and the winning team got to opt out of the final. I brought in math challenges twice a week and the challenges covered subject we were covering either that week or the week prior. We werie one of the only classes that was continually up and moving around, but I love to see students moving and racing to learn to math. I think they enjoy breaking away from traditional methods of learning as well. Also, if they know you are going to use a particular subject in a challenge, they will start taking better notes and asking more questions. They will also start being more responsible for each other.

Good Luck

Whenever I teach math, I always try to make the classes more interesting to students by bringing in outside stuff, such as news events. This holds their interest because it's something other than a teacher simply lecturing them or their looking at a textbook.

However, when I do this, I always make sure it's something relevant to the material, and turn it into either an exercise and/or lesson. Perfect example, there was a survey done that I thought would make a nice discussion for the class. We were talking about percents, so I had the students crunch some numbers to see if things were done right. Turns out there were some math errors in the survey's calculations.

For me......
Make the subject more interesting..... Search some articles that beyond the imagination of the students....

I know math is really a boring subject, because even me I get bored during our math time... But usually the teacher sang, dance, tell a interesting story that is related to math subject... Im Sure student will participate more....

You can also give additional points for student who will participate in class... This can make them think what to answer because student is longing for higher grades specially in math because its one of the major subject.....

Just go for it... I know you can do it...Good luck!!!

I'm not sure which grade(s) your referring to, but this might work for all: I've seen hands on being very effective. Bringing in items to assist in your daily lessons breaks the repetitiveness of daily routines. It'll be fun. Having the class participate by involving each student - rotating your questions..... pairing up students for a project, etc.
It's amazing how some teachers need to go back to teaching 'boot camp' I've seen my 2 girls enjoy a class when the teachers make education 'fun' to learn.

Use rap lyrics instead of algebra. Get the biggest, toughest kid in the class (usually called ramirez or something) on side. Let the kids call you teach.
