Personally i do ! I would go the whole hog and bring back hanging too .. Britain is in a sad state of affairs regarding crime and punishment .. The youth of today have no need to fear as they are so well protected by the law that parents can`t give their own unruly kids a good whack ! It never done me any harm when i was younger . It must be a thankless job also to be a teacher when they too have no control over kids who just want to make a nuisance of themselves . I know a boy who receives £25 a week if he can behave at school all week , this money isn`t from his parents its from the Government in some capacity ! How ridiculous ??

Kirsty- i`m not talking about little primary kids i`m talking about the smart *** teens who have an answer for everything ! They think they`re wide and they`re a nuisance to society . They are the ones that end up mugging your granny etc .

Sassysaz you are so right ! They are pampered beyond belief , its not fair and i certainly don`t see why our tax should be used to fund this .

I'm sick of my taxes being spent on pampering people who have no respect for society. It seems that if you are a law-abiding citizen, you get forgotten about. But, if you take to robbing old ladies, a whole bunch of people want to help you, coddle you and take you on nice trips out. One boy round my way was sent on a two-week whale watching trip to Alaska, just to break his 'offending cycle.' Sorry - but that offends me!!!
I reckon there should be a new rule brought in for yobs. For a first offence they get fined, for a second offence they get jailed (at least 2 years) and for a third offence - death!!! If the death penalty was reintroduced, and people KNEW they would be hanged for their crimes, then I'm sure it would have an impact on society. Britain is falling apart because we molly-coddle our criminals - This never happened in the 1930s-50s - and there was far less crime then!

I had the tawse (belt) used on me at school.......sometimes it would go up onto my wrists and it really hurt! It would leave me with weals for days. My mother had an old shaving belt (leather) hung on a nail on a wall by the fireplace, she would hit me with it at every given opportunity and some days I had weals going up my wrists ........ on my legs.....all over me......not once did anyone take any notice of this! No! the belt does not work as a punishment. I would have been more receptive to some love and understanding..........of which I am still in search of! Why have I got memories of such a life from living in a 'free' society that is the 4th largest economic country in the world? I think it is because it is 'easy' to whip and maim children both physically and mentally but it is also much harder to erase the sick individuals who perpetute this 'punishment' as those individuals are thought of as being 'good members of society'.

If you need to resort to violence to contol kids then you are doing something wrong. Don't beleive everything you read in 'The Daily Mail'.
Most kids are fine, it is only some that are bad. Why should the majority suffer for the stupidity of the few?
I can see your point of view, and feel kids should be taught responsibility at a younger age. If their parents don't teach them, then society must. Though it's not ideal, it is better to try to change the course of a youngsters life through encouragement than to beat it out of them.
Moderation my friend, is the key. Teach through example.

i totally agree! Some of the things kids get away with at school these days are ridiculous!! They have no respect for anyone and aren't afraid to do what the hell they want cos they are fully aware that there will be no comeback. As for hanging and what not why the hell not! Nothing else the bleedin government does seems to be working and perhaps if there was a proper deterrent not so many people would be so keen to break the law in the first place!
God if only i could be prime minister........

Discipline begins at home almost from birth. A little bit of going to church also wouldn't hurt. And sports, especially team sports builds character. What you are asking is for the school to take on the responsibility of discipline where the parents have failed miserably. And remember you can't bend an old tree, you have to prune and shape a seedling into what you want your end product to be.

Who raised the youth of today, and who raised their parents? If you are going to blame a generation you must also blame the previous generations. Hitting is never a good idea. There are many effective ways to control behavior that work much better that violence. I agree that paying a child to behave is a terrible idea. In the old days getting hit was one consequence to bad behavior. It's the same principal now, only without the violence. There has to be consequences that the child does not like and are related to the behavior. What I've noticed the most with bad behavior is that the parents threaten and threaten but never follow through with consequences. This makes parenting today more difficult in that way. No instant consequences like hitting. Parents have to think and be creative and often tailor consequences to the child. Parents have to be more plugged in and too many parents are too rushed and overwhelmed with modern society to put in the time and energy required.

I think there are better options for teenagers than corporal punishment. I think a better education system is half the battle - as for the crimes themselves the penalties then have to be harsher, and MUCH harsher for repeat offenders.
Also people in jail should have to work to pay for their upkeep. Criminals should have to pay their victims - in this society its always the other way around. If someone cant break their 'offending cycle' I'd rather hang them than pay for them to go watch whales. We pay taxes to give disgusting criminals the high life? Its deeply offensive.

I was taught by the Christian brothers order, who have a reputation for liberal use of the cane.
In my school the cane was used so oftain that it lost its fear factor. If I was in trouble I hoped to get the cane because detention was 1 and a quarter hours long and was a pain in the backside.
Kids do need more discpline today, but I don't think beating anyone has any positive outcome. Taking away their free time (or even their mobiles) would have a greater effect

NO, it is the parents that need to be disciplined this way maybe because of all this junk food bad parenting and drinks and drugs that children are out of control to much television and over exposed idiots in the media also contribute to a childs ideal.
more youth clubs with PROPER adult supervision needed, and cheaper activity centres too ( for all ages), and to teach them about lifestyle choices and helping them to become better educated about stuff, positive rolemodels etc. parents also need to play a part in this, maybe getting a few parents involved in activites...

Bring back the belt AND the cane, and let parents give their illiterate innumerate badly behaved offspring a decent bit of discipline at home without all the do-gooders poking their two pennorth in, and whilst we're at it, Policemen should be allowed to clip kids round the ear if they catch them up to no good or they're being lippy.
It's all down to just one simple word:
DISCIPLINE !
