Pawns are considered foot soliders. There are 16. Bishops are all men thats 4. Rooks are military establishments therefore not really men. Knights supposedly have men on their back but you only ever see the horses, so we'll add another four anyways. 2 Kings.

There are 32 pieces on the board at the start (assuming that's what you meant by "man"). Four rows are filled up with pieces with four more empty, so half the 64 squares are occupied.
