what you describe is only a traditional marriage in some cultures....in America, we call that an "arranged marriage" and I just don't understand how it could provide a happy life for anyone...but......

If you do not believe in traditional or arrange marriage, by all means go for love marriage. But all I have to say is that arranged marriages work well enough for people whose hearts are not already engaged to someone. The process of living together, gives two people enough time to befriend and understand each other and develop a lifestyle best suited to both of them, more or less like love marriage. But perhaps, it is more sort of 'blind date'. But you still get to know some preliminary information about the person. In love marriages too, you are in dark about the actual family dynamics.

You cannot plan to have a love marriage. If you fall in love then you can arrange to go about getting married. Or you can plan to go the traditional way and "see" prospective partners who have already passed muster with older family members. In the latter case, you must have a longer meeting and getting-to-know period together, before you agree.
It depends on your family set up, social traditions followed and your personal preferences.
Marriages succeed only when both walk into the alliance in full awareness and maturity--- agreeable to compromise, collaborate, cooperate and help the other to become a more complete person.

depends where are you from which society , that matters . in india traditional marriages are must because there are different rituals for the better married life ahead and we have to get connected , to be in a society as we were before marriage . love marriage is more attractive because we are more exposed to the media nowadays but we forget that when we are in love its a different situation we are not facing the world of responsiblities and after we get married as the days pass by the friction starts to build up in between because of the daily needs and demands . majority of love marriages do face these sort of problems . but in my veiw we have to look at our family values before taking a step towards this

If by traditional you mean arranged by others as opposed to arranged by the marrying persons, I quite agree with you. Although some such marriages work well, I would much rather make the choice myself.

Marriage should only take place between two people who are in love to the extent that they would give their life or one another. People who want to grow old together, people that know they will remain faithful to each other until they die. Accepting all faults in the other person, yet listening and understanding the others point of view, not trying to mould that person in to someone you want them to be, treating each other as equals in everything.Respecting each others wishes for the future and not standing in their way.
When you are ready to do all this and more, then you are ready to be married
