What makes you think ants don't dominate the planet now?
There's a lot more of them than there are humans. They have successfully adapted to a wide variety of habitats and ecosystems, and in many regions the majority of biomass (weight of all the living things in the area) is dominated by ants.
If humans were to disappear tomorrow, there would be a some puppies and kitties that would miss us (for a while), and quite a few farm animals would die, but other than a handful of species (some cockroaches, pigeons, rats, bedbugs, head lice), the Earth would be largely unchanged (or even better off).
If ants were to disappear, numerous plant, animal and even fungal species that depend on ants for pollination, seed dispersal, food, protection or any of a variety of other relationships would all go extinct. Since we depend on some of these species, we might go extinct too.
Our intelligence doesn't make us a dominant species, it just gives us the arrogance to think we matter to the rest of the world. The ants and other insects are already the real rulers of this planet.

Intelligence is tricky to measure in the animal kingdom because it's not a one-size-fits-all trait. Different species have to be smart at different things. Like, Arctic Terns have to be brilliant at navigation, but no so much of course with chimps. Likewise, chimps (and even some birds) are good at using and even making tools to help them collect food....but that kind of intelligence wouldn't serve a shark very well (even though sharks have amazing memories). These kinds of issues are what make announcing a winner so difficult. Ultimately, I'd bet that the animal with the most "human-like" intelligence is probably the chimp. And other primates. Their social structure, language ability, use of tools, and problem-solving aptitudes are more like ours than any other creature. But certainly dolphins, parrots, crows, ravens, and canines possess an intelligence that makes them uncannily easy to relate to. PS Apparently the noble octopus is a brainer, too, but I don't know the details.....

The first step in dominating a world is ability to pass information to offspring. Then one must develop logical thinking. After they must learn to control nature (such as dwelling building and ensuring food supply). Those three steps will allow a species to begin it's domination. It took mankind many hundreds of thousand years. Obviously all other species seen today can not ever dominate the world because there environment has not yet forced them into such an evolutionary pattern. Therefore what ever does come next, will likely not be recognizable to any of us today.

These are my ideas and explanations:
Monkeys: Their DNA is almost similar to ours, and they're incredibly intelligent.
Ants: Great group work, and they've pretty much gotten down the whole society mumbo-jumbo.
Dogs: Since they've been around us so long, I'm sure they're starting to pick up on things.
Pigs: Pigs are absolutely brilliant creatures.
Birds: Soon everyone won't be walking, they'll be flying. The birds are already a step ahead of us legged fools!
