My video player was given to my grandchildren because it was just clutttering the apartment. Dvds are great, but there is no way to record television programs on them; is there?

Of course there is. You need to either get yourself a TiVo unit, which doesn't even require dvd's (though they do have higher end units that allow you to burn your shows on there) and allows you to record and watch your favorite tv shows. You can even set this up for an entire season just by pressing a few buttons. It's much easier than using a dvd burner to record shows. But if you really want the shows on dvd, all you need to do is go down to your local circuit city or best buy and ask for a standalone dvd recorder. (you can get one that also accepts vhs tapes too, if you still have some lying around. Some units even let you transfer your old vhs tapes to dvd) Be sure to get some blank dvds, and ask the salesperson if he can pick you out blank dvds that are compatible with your dvd recorder, as there are several kinds. There is a brand called "LiteOn" that makes a decent, cheap dvd recorder, otherwise you make want to splurge on the higher end pioneer or sony dvd recorders, as the quality is very good with these units. Good luck!

I had Tivo and hated it. I reccomend subsribing to DVR from your cable company. It works better than Tivo.
