Apple, actually. My cousin, who does all the sound sampling for her solo project Annae Cattaya, has used various computers and found that Apple is the best for sound files.

An Apple, I understand brand loyalty but a musician/producer would be much better off with an Apple than a Dell.
If you'd stick to the Wintel or WAMD route then opt for a high performance custom built solution, like those from Voodoo and Falcon Northwest. Go for a high performance soundcard like the new Creative Soundblasters. More than a GB of RAM and plenty of hard disc space, a dual core processor won't hurt either.
If you go Apple get the latest OS X version running on a G5 or a core duo.

Don't - build your own.

You will be wanting a bigger hard drive than most machines for all that digital audio you'll be storing. You'll want a top-spec processor with decent, adjustable fans that can be set to a lower, quieter setting for when you are recording. You would be wise to get a sound card that has a front panel interface, possibly an external interface (depending on your needs), something like the SoundBlaster Audigy range cards. Basically, for a really good machine for this purpose, nothing "off-the-shelf" will really do - the best path in my opinion is to build it yourself, or to get someone to build it for you. In my experience this almost always works out cheaper too, and I know musicians love that ;)

AN APPLE MAC!!! I'm a faithful IBM user myself, but from what I've heard whenever our I.T. guys are asked by others, including Alesa Lajana who has, I believe 2, c.d's out now and a website which you could Google I'm sure APPLE MAC'S are definitely the best computers for mixing, recording and just generally creating (I'm no music buff) music and/or sounds. Alesa (she plays acoustic guitar, a lap steel, not to mention a number of other instruments) decided on an Apple Mac Laptop (I'm sorry, I don't know the model), and just raved about it as well as demonstrated her next soon to be released c.d., the last time we had lunch. (I'm sure Apple would be better qualified to suggest which model).

Yeah, go with Apple.
I have a friend who's also a musician/producer and he swears by them.

As a pc fan, I have to say Mac. Mac is better for any kind of artwork, whether music or painting.
