Many different reasons:
- Large natural resources
- Culture & history
- Relatively stable and transparent institutions
- Isolation from other continents (invasion from outside powers less likely)
- Large population base
- Capitalist market system
- Plain good luck (not a bad thing; I wouldn't mind some more good luck)

This is a very complex question and can not be answered in a paragraph or two. Many books have been published on this exact subject. More correctly, the world is divided into the " Haves " and the " Have Nots " Some people say the rich countries should give more to the poor countries. And billions are given to the 3rd world by the first world, but the status remains unchanged.
Population control plays a big part in national wealth. If you have one fish and you divide it among 100 people, everyone is going to be hungry.
If California, Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Arkansas were given to Mexico , in less than 10 years, these prosperous states would be poverty stricken, dirty, over populated slums. The Catholic Church is responsible for much of the poverty in the world as is the Muslim faith in so far as they are against birth control. No birth control = poverty. Yes, that is an over simplification but a major factor.

Hello,
Resources.
We have so many resources to use in our inventions and products.
1. Silver
2. Gold
3. Iron
4. Ore
5. Petroleum
That is a lot of resources that made many Americans in the 19th and 20th Century millionaires and made America prosperous.
I have read many of the responses above my answer. Very sad because I do not recall any of them stating any of their ancestors created or made anything to make America what it is today.
Hey, none of my ancestors were inventors or creators of anything we use today, but without this computer, or telephone or television, we would have no means of communicating, except by pen and paper.
So, do not listen to these people who only see the bad side of yes, greedy Americans. There is a good side of American and we should thank these inventors for their minds for creating the electronics we use today.
Hope this helps you............................... : - O

The United States are rich in resources and, sorry to say, driven by greed and capitalism, which has made them one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

I really think it has to do with the States being founded on Christian principles, which would include freedom and justice.

I'd like to say "compassion and tolerance," but it's probably just greed.
