Hell is a tool used by most religious organizations to 1) drive fear into people so they will convert and 2) keep them in line so the tithe's will keep flowing.

Hell as a place/space location:
Hell is the home of condemned souls and devils; the place of eternal punishment for the wicked after death, presided over by Satan who (according to the Bible) will be sent there one day but Satan is not living there now. Nowhere in the Bible is Satan mentioned as currently residing in Hell. In fact Job 1:6 states that Satan appeared with other angels "before the Lord." Then God asked Satan where he had been, Satan replied, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it." - Satan freely moves about Earth. In 1 Peter 5:8 it is stated, "Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."

"Hell is other people."--Huis Clos by Jean-Paul Sartre
I believe that hell is something which exists in people's minds. I don't believe in the fire-and-brimstone bit, ruled over by and evil red immortal with horns, a pitchfork, and a tail. If you want some great, traditional depictions of hell, read Inferno by Dante, or if you'd prefer something shorter, read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce--it's in chapter 4. Hell is supposed to be a location of eternal torture, both psychologically and physically. I believe that hell is contraditory to the Christian ideas of forgiveness and the more recent depiction of God as a compassionate being. Therefore, hell must be an invention of the human conscious. It is designed to as a form of punishment for those who do evil...and to frighten the "hell" out of people so that they will be too scared to commit any form of sin.
I hope this clears things up.
P.S.: My favorite depiction of hell is in Huis Clos, a.k.a. No Exit, in which hell is a poorly decorated hotel room. It's a rather short play, which you can read in an hour or so.

Go to the movie store and rent "What Dreams May Come" with Robin Williams. This movie really tells a story. Changed my life. Seriously. Believe me. To add. I was once told. Going to hell would be like the worst thing you can think of happening to you in life. Happening for an eternity in death. Over and over again. Think about it!

I think hell is a mental state, the state you are in after death. The ever forever afterlife might be spent in various states. And one of these eternal ones is hell

think about it: did you ever notice how hell is described to us as a place that is torturous to the human body made up of earthly tortures? fire..pain, etc. if it is our soul going to hell, why are we fearing things only able to be felt by the the sense of the human body, which we are told is left here on earth? it's because people are easy to influence and they can identify with these earthly pains. hell is described as a "place", also an earthly term. if a soul existed, it would not go to a place, rather it would be in a different state. it's just used to scare people into choosing a religion--and most probably won't admit that is why they are religious, because they are afraid of hell.
hell is religious propaganda! haha
the thing is when we weren't alive, we had no consciousness, and when we die, we enter that state again. simple as that. we just can't even fathom not having control of ourselves, or not having thoughts once our brain stops. it's not within our human ability to be able to conceive such an idea because it is a human, an animal instinct, to try as hard as you can to survive, even if it means believing you can survive into another life once you die in this one. i can't prove it, but i do not believe in hell.
ps) LOVE how all the christians are giving a thumbs down to all those questioning their religion. don't they mention something about judging others in that bible of yours? way to fullfil the christian stereotype--arrogant and judging.

I personally think of hell as more of an urban legend... and since no one can really prove it exists... well... I guess everyone will have to contine being good little boys and girls, mindlessly following all the "spiritually sound" guidlines so they never find out...
Um, everyone but me... Who knows for sure, right?

As an athiest there is no God therefore no heaven
1 can not exist without the other
The closest thing I come up with on religeon is if there is a god it takes an equal share of you because we are all cabable of doing good things for others and the flipside all cabable of doing bad things as well. I think I will call it human nature

No actually, I don't beleive in it. Earth is hell, where WE live. People should be scared of strangers, not evil spirits and hell.

Hell is where God sent Satan after he got dissed. He didn't have a good comeback, so he simply used his mighty power to cast him into a fiery inferno. Hell is basically your worst nightmare mixed into one big **** hole, mine would be:
-Being in total darkness
-Being alone
-Not being able to hear
-Not being able to feel the breeze.
