God is the personification of an entity greater than the humans that seem to have needed something more powerful than they were from the time of thought. The gods and goddesses of the Romans and Greeks are now our mythology, the same with the ones the Vikings, Celts, the natives of the Easter Islands, the American Indians, etc., etc., worshiped in their time. Every race and culture has needed a god or goddess and religion and I dare say we always will, so, regrettably, the killing over varied beliefs will, also, always continue. Yet a person who has no belief in any spirituality is a very sad one, a conundrum there. But I will not wear a penance stone about my neck for them, they will need to do that for themselves.

Although, as a non-believer, I do not subscribe to the notion of a god, this is probably the best answer I can give.
The concept of god differs from religion to religion, although every one of them talks about attaining god. From that I like to think that the concept of god, is attainment of an ideal in our own lives. God can just be the manifestation of the human ideal.
In Hinduism, atleast the earlier forms, god is not a physical manifest, but the greater Aatman, or soul. The all knowing that encompasses the universe, and the supreme intellect. In one way the aatman we talk about is just time and space.
I think it is the same concept in all other religions, just a little dumbed down to create a god in the image of man rather than the other way around.

The one who is baffling the minds of the humans, intelligent and ordinary alike, with additional questions like What is God, which is God, why is God and where is God.
It is like lookig at ourselves in the multi reflecting mirrors ... only a part of it is clearly visible in one reflection. To visualise the whole thing you need more than a mirror. You need a 3 dimension image construction in the mind.
God is exactly that. Each is seeing just one of God`s facets. You need to go deep within to see God as a whole.

In my opinion, no one, and everyone, can answer this with anything - look how many thousands of religions there are. People make up stuff because it gives them comfort. Imagine....no religion*
I was a born-again Christian until my friends died horrible deaths from AIDS. How could a so-called "loving God" allow so much suffering? When my cat is hurt, I help him. Prayer is a crap-shoot as many people pray and get no result.
My opinion is - instead of asking who is god, ask "who am I" ?
Good topic !

God is the second cousin of Sakyamuni Buddha. The real name of God was actually Carl, and he worked for several years in a gas station just outside of Mumbai. He enjoyed watching American football in the evenings with his wife, Diane. He was a simple man, a hard worker, and could have a bit of a temper at times. He died at the age of eighty-seven of liver failure related to alcohol abuse. The community mourned for a few days, but they got over it. Sakyamuni Buddha said a few words at the funeral and held up a flower. Somebody laughed, and Buddha ate his own foot. The world rejoiced. Huzzah!

The greatest drug dealer of all time, he's the opiate to the masses. He cushions you from the reality of your utter death and annihilation by offering you a rose-colored afterlife. He bribes you with a heaven and threatens you with a hell. Unfortunately, we was created by primitive barbarians to explain the unknown universe, prior to the coming of the Law of Gravity and Quantum Physics.
Obsolete genes do not die overnite, so we'll be seeing god for some time to come....

By 'death' god is not referring to the physical death which we might have in mind. God is referring to something which will happen in eternity, after our physical deaths.
