I am a first time tampon user, and normally I wouldn't want to use them, but tomorrow we have a big excursion to Wet and Wild (A big water park up here) I tried to use them, but they would go in about two cm then stop, and no matter how hard I pushed it wouldn't go in further. If I can't work this out tonight, then I have to stay back and miss out on the excursion that me and my friends have been looking forward to all year... I don't know what I am doing wrong, I am doing the whole squatting thing. They are ones my step mum gave me, they dont have an intserter thinging, its just the tampon...

I tried talking to my step mum and asking her to try and get me a smaller one with an applicator, but she just brushed it off as if it wouldn't work. Something about my hymen not being broken so its hopeless. What can I do?

I guess I am just going to have to go without. I begged my step mum to take me to get some with an applicator, but she just refused, saying it wouldn't work. I have no way of getting there myself and by the time I could get a friend to do it, I would already have to be at the water park...

Is there any way to break the hymen with the tampon or something to make it work?

I had the exact thing happen to me-the whole water park thing the next day and my mom buying me tampons with cardboard applicators. First of all, definitely get some with plastic applicators. They are much easier. Also, I found that out of all the possible positions the instructions give, standing on one leg and raising the other works the best. I had to stand stand with the bathtub to my right (or left if you are left-handed) and put my right leg on the side of the tub so that my legs were apart. Then, make sure the tampon is tilted slightly toward your lower back and relax. It should slide in smoothly. Good luck and I hope you don't have to miss out on all the fun like I did!
Note: The fact that you still have your hymen has nothing to do with tampon use. I still had mine when I first used them. Maybe you could buy some yourself? It is kind of embarrassing but you have to do it eventually. Your stepmother sounds like an idiot.

When I first used tampons, I had this exact same problem. It caused me a lot of pain (down there) and I missed a pool party because of it. I completely stopped using them for years. But now all I use are tampons and I don't know what I'd do without them. What you need to do is get a smaller tampon with an applicator. You probably have a very light period and you're too dry for the tampon to slide right in. I use the ones without applicators, but it is imperative that a beginner use an applicator. You also might want to use a little bit of lubrication on the outside of the applicator. Use a very small amount. Also, I can already tell you that unless you fully saturate the tampon it’s going to hurt to pull it out. You'll just have to slowly work it out. Since you are having a problem putting it in, you are probably going to have a problem taking it out. That was why I didn't use them anymore. I was using a tampon that was way too big. My absolute favorite is OB. They fit so well. They conform to your body. Also, I hear that the Tampax pearl is good. I suggest you try those, since OB can be hard to find. I hope this helps I know how frustrated you are. Since you're stepmum isn't really helping you might have to go get some yourself or ask a friend. ^_^

Sorry you're out of options. You don't have to break the hymen to get the tampons inside. You're vagina should stretch enough to get an appropriately sized tampon in, but you're stuck with one big tampon with no applicator and no help in sight? You may (or may not) break the hymen by forcing a "super"-sized tampon in. Those things are pretty big. I wasn't able to use that sized until after I gave birth. Well, I guess you could improvise by using some type of lubricant to help insertion; a mild lotion or something? Lubricate yourself (the enterance) and the tampon, but not too much. Sounds awful, but its kinda like the first time you have sex. It can hurt, but I'm sure you'll be able to get it in. I really don’t want you to hurt yourself. I remember buying applicator-less, super tampons my when I first started and it hurt – a lot! Plus, you may want to leave your hymen intact for umm, when you lose your virginity. It’s NOT important, but its something to think about. Hope this helps.

Get one with an inserter. The ones without are wretched. I refused to use tampons for years because I first tried one without the inserter, I had the same problem you did (the day I was heading to a water park, no less) gave up and was miserable for the day and held a grudge against tampons for the next two years. Just go pick some up, read the directions and you'll be fine.

Oh, and get one without the cardboard applicator with the tapered head. They're much easier. Might I suggest Playtex Beyond? (I still have trouble with certain brands and I found them to be basically fail-safe).

Using tampons involves getting to know your anatomy. The vagina is not a straight tunnel. Gently insert a finger first and get a feel to where the tampon has to go. You basically want place the tampon beyond the muscles at the entrance. Any discomfort with tampons is usually occurring when a tampon is not high enough in the vagina. Relax, breathe, be gentle and patient. If you are not sure, go to a - female - gynecologist and let her help you.

You really do need to find one with an applicator. If you need to buy Lites and just change it more often go ahead and do that. The best applicator is Tampax Pearl because it has a very smooth feel to it and it goes in really easy. Either way make sure you get a plastic applicator because it is easier than cardboard (which is really dry and wont slide in as easy). Also, dont think about it or stress about it cuz that will only make it harder to get it in.

Good Luck! I hope you make it out there!

Try using a tampon with a plastic applicator. They are much easier to insert. Also use a small amount of lubricant such as KY Jelly. Just place a little on the top of the applicator, this makes it much easier to slide in and more comfortable.

Relax. Practice makes perfect. Don't hurt yourself. If you do get it in, move around before heading out the door and make sure it doesn't hurt or bother you. I would recommend Tampax pearl because the shiny-like applicator is easy to slide through and seemed to adjust better than others I've tried. If all else fails wear some Daisy Dukes.

Some girls/women have this problem when they're still virgins (not all but a few). The best thing to get is Tampax Pearl, they're easier to insert and go in more smoothly than others because of the plastic applicator.

Another thing you have to realize is that you have to relax, if you aren't relaxed the muscles in your vagina will be tense.

oh man, i remember going thru the same thing. first of all stick with the applicator, second, it sounds redundant but relax, u are trying to force it and therefore are getting all worked up. Don't push, try laying down with ur legs spread and hold it there, put very little pressure on it, dont hurt yourself, if it doesnt slide in just lay there, watch tv, when u loosen up it will slide right in, it really will! good luck
