What size tank? That is the main determining factor when recommending species/a community. Most lfs (local fish shops) will order fish for you if you ask. You won't have the same luck w/ a corporate comapny. EDIT: Then you have a perfect size for one of my personal favorite communities! 4 emperor tetras (1 male, 3 female) 3+ khuli loaches 15 or so ghost shrimp 1 centerpiece fish. I use a paradise gourami in my tank. But there are a decent number of showier community fish that could work well. You could have your pet store order some small cichlids. Neolamprologus mulitfasciatus (google it) are perfect for a tank this size and have some really interesting and quirky behaviors.

It depends on how big a tank you can afford.
If you only have a small tank like 10-30 gallons, how about a pair of Tanganyikan cichlids? These cichlids are from a lake in Africa, where the floor is littered with shells .They are small fish, so they live in the shells. They breed easily and have very cool behaviours.
In a 50 gallon tank, you could have a group of peacock cichlids. Look 'em up, they're stunning.
The larger the tank you have, the more choices you have. In a 60 gallon tank, you could keep an oscar.
Go to your local fish store to see what is available and in your price range. Write down the names of what you like, come home and research them. Make sure you can accomodate them and the tank they require.
Please note that fishkeeping is not a cheap hobby, if you do it right. And if you do it wrong, you end up wasting money because the fish get sick and die. It is definitely worth it to do your research first ; your fish will be healthier and look better because of it.
Try finding a local aquarists society for good deals on nice fish and equipment.

Loaches are pretty cool. YoYo loaches are less than $5 each, but make sure to get at least three of them so they'll be happy. They will come to the top and greet you when you're about to put food in the tank. They're not as timid as other loaches, and they swim at all levels in the tank. They will fin nip slower fish, so keep that in mind when you pick out something else to put with them.

Try Tiger Oscars. They are awesome to have. They will eat goldfish, snails, other fish. I've owned some before and they'd eat cold cuts, anything that was meat. They'd jump out of the water slightly to yank it out of my hands. They are beautiful to watch and grow to a decent size.

I would say for a beginner, a betta is your best bet.
Please do research on this or any other fish you get before buying, tho, so you know what you're getting into.
IMO, the best resource for info about Bettas is Healthy Betta .com

I loved my Oscars. They're not too expensive but you do have to either make weekly trips to buy feeder fish or get a small tank to keep a good supply on hand. And, get a GOOD filter cuz they're messy eaters and poopers!

You can try Vampire Fish. They are a cousin of the Baracuda and they have the teeth to prove it. They are very lone fish because they seem to have a habit of eating you put in your tank except each other. I have 4 in my tank and trust me they are awsome to watch when they hunt there food
