Because people can be extremely stupid!

People who can not stand on their own two feet and take responsibility for their own short comings and faults have to place blame somewhere. Some people blame the government, some blame the church or their god, some blame another race. It's easier for the small minded among us to blame others for their positions in life. God ketches a bunch of it, then it goes down hill from there. Blacks and whites blame each other or jews or history. Those that stand above the others and take the blame for themselves or place it in circumstance have less tendency to fail and don't become racist.
There is also the instillment of racism in the young. Mick and Irene hate, they teach jr to hate as.well. They also use the crutch racism affords them. The reason that they are poor is because rich jews wont let them have money. The reason they live in the poor government projects is because that's where the white man makes them live. The reason they cant get food stamps is because some mexican got them first. They teach Jr. that this is acceptable.
There is also the financial rewards of racism. It starts with the worst racists needing money and their followers donating to them.
Racism breeds discontent. Discontent breeds criminals. Criminals make money for the "system".
Racism is as much an industry as drugs.
Take James, he hates blacks, bill knows this and plays on it. Bill tells James that he has a gun for sale and will sell it to James so James can go kill darky. James buys the gun and goes to kill Jr. in a drive by. James goes to jail where he makes furniture, the furniture sells and the system makes money. Jr. is dead no longer taking state aid and that saves the system some money. Jr's mom goes nuts and ends up institutionalized in a state asylum. Medicaid pays for mom and the people make money off pharmaceuticals, doctors attorneys yadda yadda ad nausium.
This sounds like it's just crazy, it is crazy. But, lets look at the reality. White America stays on the defensive when it comes to racism. Whites in general are not as racist as people would want them to believe. It is no different then black people. They stay on the defensive too. for the same reason, so do jews, so do Latins and orientals.
If we are all on the defensive, who are the offence???
The System!
Racism ends and those hate mongers wont make a dime. They have to keep it going so they can keep going to the bank.
The government needs racism so the crime rate can stay high enough to pay for prisons.
I doubt one in one thousand people are racist. But that is enough to make hate and hate crimes pay.

Putting down other people makes them feel empowered but the truth is anyone can do that. It takes someone with real virtue and strength to be able to help lift someone up.

It's because we celebrate our differences, rather than celebrate our similarities. The 'I'm _____ and proud' attitude, regardless if it's whites, blacks, latino, asian, gays, whatever, is divisive.
If you do not regard your race as superior, than you will not be proud to be a member of yours as opposed to another race. Period. as long as people are bent on denying this fact, racism will exist.
