In chennai youve got

airtel, sify, BSNL, Tata (or vsnl), reliance etc

Since you say you're in Singapore I'm assuming you wouldnt be here to arrange the connection and everything. Filing a request for Avsnl internet connection is an absolute headache, the service sucks like hell and to top that, they put random charges on your bill and everything. Sify isnt that bad but the connection quality depends on how far your home is from their office(or center etc) . Every two days there's a problem and their service is really really bad so finally everything becomes so iritating and all . Reliance or Tata Indicom are good but incline their prices to benefit their voice plans so its better to keep away from them.

With Airtel its different, all you need to do is call them. Here's their number(044 42112345) and just let them know you are interested. They even come to your house to install everything (they have a promotional offer where installation is free, otherwise they collect around 500 bucks) and to collect bills ( even for the initial payment too) plus they got nice plans. (Check out the links below) They have a 600(+100 modem rental) plan for unlimited internet downloads(at 128kbps, others charge around 1500 for the same deal), so maybe Itd be good for you if you are planning to talk on yahoo/skype etc. As a user of almost all of these services , Id strongly recommend you suggest them to use Airtel than BSNL
But if you still prefer a vsnl you might want to go to the following link

Data One broadband bsnl - http://chennai.bsnl.co.in/faq/BroadBand.htm

Airtel chennai - ( go to Tariff plans > Home 128/256 plans )
http://airtelbroadband.in/aboutdsl.htm

p.s. Im not an Airtel agent or anything, just a happy customer. They have an awesome 24hrs support and take the trouble of personally coming over to fix any problems if there are ( though its very rare you have one).
I called my agent, he says deposit is still free.
Well, hope this is helpful :-)

I recently took a connection from airtel. The service is good and I would recommend you that. There is no deposit with them but they charge for installation and some instruments. So please check this option before you decide.

easily not. there is basically not any fee in case you're utilising yahoo messenger. Please examine with the plan which you're at the instant having on your land line and alter the plan.
