Consult a good website like moneycontrol.com or
valueresearchonline.com ( these are India-specific i think you are not in India)
Look for the top-rated funds ( usually these are the ones with the highest return over a longer period of time )
For example, a fund that has existed for over 5 years and has consistently given return of 50% annually is better than a fund that gave 70% return over a period of 6 just months, since the prior fund has been a consistent performance record.

Also, if you are new to the equity and money market don't go in for share trading. Just restrict yourself to mutual funds.
