it is not only the muslims who do this, even us here in the cordilleras... yes for us its not particularly a respect but more of a tradition or culture.
as to the muslims.. i have no idea... but your question is so good, at least i've learned that it is not only us who practice this...

Uhmm-if your dead visits a funeral home or even a morgue-their bodies are washed too, its not just a Muslim thing.
Not only is it respectful, but dead bodies don't smell too good either. I suppose washing it is better than leaving them unwashed.
