Personally, I'm a fan of Geoff Johns, David S. Goyer and I practically idolize Mark Waid.

What about some of you other DC and/or Marvel readers?

I have to lean toward Peter David. His stuff is witty and he explores new groud in established characters. Take his story arc in The Hulk where he explored why Banner became the mindless Hulk when he got angry. Even though Marvel has since destroyed his theory so they could have a good old "Hulk smash" slugger again, his story was genius. Or how about Davids work in the short-lived "Young Justice" at DC? It was often laugh out loud funny, but still packed an action punch.

The only other writer that jumps to mind immediately is Ann Nocenti, who did an incredible and thought provoking cycle at "Daredevil" (the "Daredevil in Hell" saga). It was beyond literate by comic book standards.

Agreed, Mark Waid is pretty much unbeatable.

I also think Mark Millar (Ultimates) and Jim Krueger's (Justice) efforts are flat-out excellent. Kurt Busiek's work on Marvels, and Walt Simonson's Thor run remain modern-day classics.

As a johnny-come-lately to the comic book medium, I really like Joss Whedon's writing for Astonishing X-Men.

At the other end of the dramatic spectrum, I must give props to the team of Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis for their matchless madness of the "Bwah hah hah" era Justice League... That stuff is priceless!
