That depends on your tongue. I had mine done for 4 years and took it out and a day later it was closed to far to put in a ring again. I had to have it repeirced, had that in for a year, and haven't had anything in it for awhile, and I can still get a really small wire through.
Its better to get a spacer if you need it to be invisible. What do you need to take it out for?

It'll still close up trust me I've had my done when I turn 15 when I had to go to the hospital when I was 18 I had to take it out in it close up and It was out for 15 mins. Then I had to go get it redone and that was a ***** and it hurt like hell I have had my tounge done 4 times dont take that ***** out.

If you need to take it out for purely cosmetic reasons try using a clear spacer, you can buy one at any piercing shop or store that sells tongue rings. If you need to take it out for a medical procedure check with your doctor to see what alternatives are okay.

I think it is cuz 5 years is pretty long enough. But if your worried that it will close, then i suggest you only leave it opened like only at least 3 days.

the tongue heals its self pretty fast if you where to take your ring for about 16hrs the hole might be to small to re-insert the ring no matter how long you had your tongue pierced the healing process doesn't change
