If you are already dilated to 5cm, I would just have your Dr. or Midwife break your water. Once that happens you will find you progress rather quickly since you are already dilated so far. I was in much the same boat when I had my son. I was dilated to a 4 with regular but VERY weak contractions. My OB broke my water and a few hours later he was born! It was so much better than risking my water breaking on its own and my not being able to make it to the hospital in time. Once you are dilated that far and labor begins, you usually have very little time.

Don't break your waters as suggested, wait unitl about 7 cm for that. Once the water is broken you will be given 24 hours to deliver. If you don't deliver in that time, you will be sent in for a c-section.

As a doula, I suggest LaborBoost Labor Cream or Balm. Our doula group and midwives have seen this work effectively to get active labor patterns within 8 hours of application. This cream method is recommended over castor oil because it does not cause diarrhea. We have seen a 90% success rate, when the cervix is ready for labor.

Happy Birthing!

Well, I'll tell you everything that I was told, none of which worked:
Drink chamomile tea, did absolutely nothing.
Walk, made my ankles swell
Do squats, actually improved my muscles, but didn't progress the birth
Ride over something bumpy, did this for over and hour, just made me sore all over. None of this worked for me. After being told that it probably would be Monday before we saw any action, my husband went out of town to work. Sunday afternoon when he's 4 hours away, my water broke!

I've heard walking helps - walk a lot. other things I've heard eat spicy food and have sex.... Who knows if any of those work.. However, nothing is 100% guaranteed to induce labor, except having a doctor break your water for you.

Labor is a natural thing, you shouldn't try and induce labor to speed it up, relax! There is a reason that it takes so long, certain things need to be in place and prepared.

You should just relax, enjoy the tea (the real purpose, btw) and everything will work out fine! Your kid will still be born!

First off CONGRATULATIONS! i'm currently a student majoring in ob/gyn and the most common things to induce labor is sexual intercourse, walking, and spicy food. Good Luck Mommy!!!

Raspberry leaf tea only helps if taken 6-8 wks prior to labour it is used to help strenghten the uterus for labour not really to bring on contractions, you need 3-4 cups of it daily anyway and it taste like crap! (my opinion!) you have already started labour so nothing will bring it on, the safest way i know only to help you dialte quicker is walking, but murphys law, dont walk too much, conserve your energy for the later stage of labour, Good Luck!

try to find a cooperative day spa that will do reflexology. some get huffy about liability. my cousin had foot reflexology done and about 20-30 min after she left the spa her water broke. She did have to sign a waiver for the esthitician to do it. just call around and see.

My mom swore by a Tablespoon of castor oil, but I never did it. I just walked. It helped get me out of the house and thinking about something other than the upcoming pain.
