According to Freud Sigmund sometimes people block their emotions by doing the excatly opposite since their own real emotions are too painful to deal with its psychological defence mechanism...Freud called it reaction formation.
And then crying is associated with weakness, if u realize if ever a guy cries he's automatically labeled as a wuss/girly/sissy...when u openly cry ure openly showing ur sensitivity n accepting help but when ppl around u actually make fun of u n r oblivious to ur feelings then u tend to cover it up.
In the end ure so used to hidding ur feelings that u end up suppressing urself in front of others..thats y ppl laugh when they feel like crying..

I think our brain gets confused, mby our emotion part of our brain goes in to shock that causes our face and body reflex different that may not really match our real feeling and true emotion. For example, when someone is so happy, so many emotions rush through that may cause crying displaying happiness not sadness. Some people smile or laugh when they get nervous. I have certain experience some of this. Every one is different.

Its like a coping mechanism. The brain can be dyumb and even if you feel sad smiling can make you feel happy- crazy but true. If you are upset and tell people what is wrong it is likely they will think you are being unreasonable or lame, or are being selfish for having those feelings.
Its alright to feel sad sometimes, but if you feel like you have to put on a happy face for other people, you should probably find more understanding companions that you feel more comfortable around.

I feel that sometimes people laugh/smile when they are upset as a defense mechanism. I, myself do it as well. I feel like I am dying inside but I still laugh and make jokes. Sometimes totally out of text and at the wrong moment. I feel that it is something to do in order to not deal with the inner feelings that you are having.

I don't know why but sometimes when I hear something really sad and awful, I laugh. Then I get embarrassed because it sounds so insensitive, but I think it's an expression of disbelief at the absurdity of life. Not a gleeful laugh of merriment.

I do that as well. I hate showing that part of me to others, makes me feel vulenerable. So instead I try to laugh whatever it is off, until I can find time alone so I can let go.
