N. Korea is a communist country. It's only allie is China. It's always been a rogue country and doesn't want change. Or at least it's leaders don't.
S. Korea went from a poor country to a world leader in export and import. Before the war, the countries main technology was a wooden plow pulled by oxen. They've come a long way.
As long as China supports N. Korea, there won't be a merge.

WWII left its imprint on the world with no regulator of power. Soviet dominance became apparent as they acquired terriories and maintained their power within the region. The US became the international bank and it was through financial dominace the US became a regional power. US and Soviet relations had soured over the choices made during the war. It created a competion for power which became known as the Cold War. This conflict was about gaining and maintaining nuclear arms more then it was about actually fighting. The Soviet Union, at this time, is Communist and the US had their suspisions about the ideology. The US took drastic steps to prevent Communism from infultrating the Western hemisphere by using a containment foreign policy. Containment was to keep Communism from spreading to other regions of the world as it would affect US intrests.
With the Japanese surrender imminent. The United States and the Soviet Union agreed to divide Korea along the 38th parallel. Japanese forces north of that line would surrender to the Soviet Union and those to the south to the US. The two major powers divided the Korean peninsula into two occupation zones. Although later policies and actions contributed to Korea's division, the United States did not envision this as a permanent partition.[6]
In December 1945, the United States and the Soviet Union agreed to administer their halves of the country favorable to their respective political ideology. In the process, U.S. run elections supervised by the UN, but boycotted by the southern partition's left-wing parties, replaced an indigenous, left-wing government that had formed in June 1945 with one led by the right-wing anti-Communist Syngman Rhee. The Soviet Union, in turn, approved the rise of a Communist government led by Kim Il-Sung in the northern half. The Allies stated Korea would be a unified, independent country under an elected government, but failed to specify details.[7] In 1949, both Soviet and American forces withdrew.
Kim Il-Sung had approached the Soviets for a reunification plan of the pennisula. The Soviets had not okayed the invasion for fear of retaliation from the US. North Korea had become militarly strong and worked as a puppet regime of the Soviets. In June 1950, Kim went to the Soviets to request unification of the region, again. This time the Soviets gave him permission to contain the pennisula. The North Koreans charged the South Korean boarder. This civil war turned into a world conflict. North Korea's bold move surprised the world. Shortly after the invasion of the south, the US sent aid to South Korea. Thus creating the Korean War. In the end, the conflict ended in a stalemate.
North and South Korea's split was never ment to be perminate. It was a temporary solution to the overall problem. South Korea has been better off economically, politically and socially. North Korea has many of their own problems. Kim Jong-Ill being one of them.

Yes it would be wonderful if everyone could kiss and make up. But that is not possible now. The communist side wants their way and the South Koreans want it their way. Plus economy would suffer as well. For the powers that be that instigate all of these things know that as long as the communists stay within their way of governmental policies, with low value to the capitalistic ways, the South can still prosper and boy do they prosper. It is a well known tactic of war and controling "divide and conquer" and to the victor goes the spoils? in this case China and Russia?
