Toskala & Nabokov in SJ and Bryzgalov & Giguere in ANA and Aebischer & Huet in Montreal are a few.
But do they work?
I've only known Ken Dryden and Bunny Laracque in the 70's to be successful.
I dont think they work as evidenced with the manny-roli fiasco in minnesota.

These are the last few i can think of that were successful -
vernon and osgood in the 90s in detroit seemed to work.
hasek & biron took the sabres to the finals in the late 90s
irbe and weekes split time in carolina when they went to the finals a few years back.

if the goalies play a similar style then it can work, but if the Dmen a used to different goalies back there every night it can get frustrating. You need to use 2 goalies to keep fresh, but you also need an established starter - so no, it doesnt work.

Two of those situations you named are no longer 2 goalie systems. Huet and gigure have established themselves as the starter and start 3 out of 4 games and sometimes 100% of the games in any given week. The only 2 goalie system that worked before recently was in Minnesota with Fernandez and Roloson but usually one of the goalies establishes himself and the other gets traded, as was the case in that situation. San Jose might have a difficult time trading either one of thier goalies since they are very good, but their system has worked so far. Even though, they are not a classic two goalie system because Toskala does get the majority of starts.

Ken Dryden took over after his first year he only played in like 8 regular season games but then took over the #1 spot for good. Huet is #1 in Montreal now Abby is clearly the back up. and to answer your question no it doesn't work these players will get tired of being pulled and not start a game which they thought they would get the start, look at what happen last year with the Flyers Esche was pist off most of the year and i still think his not to happy with his situation right now cause Niitty plays great then falls apart then Esche gets back in and it goes back and forth it just doesn't work. you go with your #1 goalie just because he has one bad game doesn't mean nothing look at the Ducks last year kept going back and forth and they didn't get no where.

Ronnie Gardocki>>>> at the time Osgood was playing just over 50 games when Vernon was there, and Hasek was playing over 60 games and Irbe was playing over 60 games there was no 2 goalie system on this teams.

I think it's a waste of talent. There are many backups who could be #1 in another team. There are many back ups who are really good and would be better somewhere else to showcase their talent. Upside about 2 goalie system is you can always rely on your back up to step up when called upon.

Sometimes. Not all the times. I guess it really depends on the players personalities. If they really don't mind sharing the responsibilities, then I guess it works. Just check out their teams records. That is definitive proof that it either does or doesn't work. It obviously does for both San Jose and Anaheim.

Why wouldn't it work?? Go with who's hot, right?? As long as the coaching staff has the talent and patients to make the system work, then I see nothing wrong with the system.
