You say you have loads of important data, that may be the problem. The drive has to spin up to full speed to read the information it needs, one solution I can think of is to put some of your info on Cd's or DVDs so you can get it off the hard drive or you could try defragmenting your computer first to see if that works. Those two solutions could possibly be the fastest fix.

A simple way to think of a hard drive is that it's a super fast record player. It is a mechanical device with moving parts moving very very fast. When you hear noises that you have not heard before it could be many things. But the best chances are that one of the pieces of the hard drive, the arm or the platters is damaged. As you use the hard drive more and more you are probably aggravating the problem. I suggest you copy as much data as you can off this hard drive onto another and then replace it asap.

Start Backing Up Your Data!

It sounds like you are getting read errors from some bad sectors.

There are programs to mark the bad sectors, but the data in them is usually unrecoverable.

For the price and time...it's cheaper to get a new, bigger hard drive!

Back up your data and format the HD. If the problem persist, you need to change your HD.

Are you sure its your HDD, could be the cpu fan. If the HDD is making a noise well its about to die, that is a huge sign that your HDD is about to kick the bucket.
