Freemasons are a fraternity "men only" There is also a female version called the Eastern Star. They have three appendent bodies the York Rite, Scottish Rite, and Shriners. Masons raise money for charity providing millions of dollars a day to various charities and it costs about 8 million a day to run a Shriners hospital where a child is treated at no charge. A society of secrets rather than a secret society all our rituals are plastered all over the Internet. But our grips, keys, and tokens are kept as secret as possible in the information age. And yes some believe we are an offshoot of the Templars and I am one of them!

The oldest and largest brotherhood in the world. As for the what part...an organization dedicated to finding good men, and making them better men.
A secret organization does not allow it's members to broadcast their membership. That is the definition of a secret organization (you are not supposed to know that the organization exists).
Rather, the Mason's are a society with secrets. This is no different than any business in the world who choses not to reveal some aspect of their business because of competitive forces. Imagine if Sony revealed their trade secrets on how they manufacture their playstation 3's I would assume someone else would copy their work.
This question has been asked since Free-Masonry began. And it will continue to be asked because people are unable to believe the truth when it is infront of their very eyes.

They are a secret organization,, you have to be invited to join,, they don't ask you to join.. you can ask to join if you know one...they will then vote on it... each person gets a marble... black or white.,... you get a black marble you don't get in.
They have a secret hand shake... they press with the thumb on the back of your hand,,., and women are not allowed in the all boys club of Freemasons. You also have to believe in God. Personally I like women so the club is not for me. I am also an atheist,,,, so again,, not for me...
