Islam was born in a period of great anarchy & turmoil in the middle east.

The area was under de-facto control(?) of looters, law-unto-themselves bandits, et al. Caravans of merchandise from and through once great babylonia, basra, et al to and from India/Europe/egypt etc were looted mid-way.

Life, property & women of the ordinary were at the absolute mercy of these bandits. Those with power would assimilate their harems with thousands of women and lead life of extraordinary luxury while the others were left with hardly any food, clothing or women. female infanticide thus reached epidemic proportions.

Slavery, forced labour and numerous other vices were widespread.

Islam sought to correct these.
1. A cap of 4 wives max was introduced
2. forced sex was made taboo & strongly punishable, including castration
3. stealing, looting, et al were to be punished very severely, including amputation of hands
4. killing of new borns was strictly banned
5. 5 times 'namaaz' a day was made compulsary- to stir people out of sloth, clean themselves and keep them healthy & active.
6. Science, arts and humanities were proposed to be supported & nurtured.

As a result, several great scholars were born- experts in varied areas- aiding the local populace as well as humanity in general. Knowledge from East & west could be cross transmitted- including the use of zero, decimal, etc [invented in India].
The then Christian church [catholics] which had gone to funny extremes had to initially give way to protestant [ and similar] movements & finally had to reform itself.
Areas of Arab re-gained their lost glory, tempered the marauding nature of the mongol invaders converted to Islam,.. its a long list.

[ by the way, Al jabeera did not 'invent' algebra- it was used in India for thousands of years prior to that- its just that he studied it in India/from Indians and wrote texts which finally led the europeans to it]

We can thank Islam for many things. Islamic scholars are responsible for the preservation of most of what we know about Greek & Roman scholarship. Have you ever wondered (assuming you ever knew) why the numerals we use are called Arabic numerals? Islam has invented and preserved much of the maths we know. Algebra is so called because it was invented by an Islamic scholar - Al Jabeera (I am not making this up).

That the question is asked demonstrates appalling ignorance.

"How Islam has kept us out of the Dark Ages" - good article by Deborah Rowe. For example:

"Islamic science in a nutshell

- When Western Europe was at its lowest intellectual peak, from the 5th to the 15th centuries, Islamic civilisation was rising rapidly. A thirst for knowledge, including science, was encouraged by the religious leaders of early Islam.
- The works of the ancients, including Aristotle, Socrates, Ptolemy, Galen, Pythagoras and Euclid were collected, safeguarded and translated into Arabic.
- The chemical properties of alkalis and acids were discovered by Islamic scientists.
- The process of distillation was formulated and used to produce petrol from crude oil.
- Islamic scientists contributed to algebra, algorithms, trigonometry, geometry, chemistry, cosmology, astronomy, medicine and optics.
- Islamic scholars developed the concepts of modern hospitals, universities, observatories and civil systems.
- The concept of zero reached medieval Europe through the Arab nations who had probably learned of it from ancient Hindu and Chinese cultures. Prior to this Europe struggled with a system of Roman numerals, in which large numbers would consist of huge strings of letters. Once zero was incorporated, numbers took on the more manageable decimal system that we use today. "

Plus, religious tolerance was practised in the Islamic World during centuries when the Christian civilization was at its most intolerant.
