I grew up in Michigan, and we called it a pop.
I moved to Arkansas, and my ex husband broke me of it by saying my dad isnt here. I now call it a coke, and as, what kind of coke do you want? (can you get that... sheesh)
Ive also heard it called a soda pop.
Easiest is to say, mt. dew, or rootbeer, or pepsi....

I'm from Ohio and use to say pop because a soda is pop with a scoop of ice cream. Other places I'd say soda and get soda water, so I usually order by brand name.

I'm from Texas. Here it's called coke (not Coke), soda (my choice), soda pop, soda water, but not pop. I think it's changing because society is a lot more mobile. Also, exposure to the media from all across the country is causing people to speak more similarly than they did "back in the day", as folks are now saying. Makes you think!
