The main reason is funding - going to the moon is very expensive. NASA gets its money from the United States Congress, and in order to go to the moon again they would need to make a compelling case to Congress as to why the program should be funded.
The main reasons that the lunar landings happened in the first place were political - the United States wanted to prove to the world that it was better than the Soviet Union, which had previously beaten the U.S. in the space race. Consequently, there was a lot of public support for the missions.
NASA has other priorities now, like the space station.

Well Caroline, NASA's Funding was cut back in 1971 50 Billion $ and they couldn't afford many more moon missions. Thats why they had ASTP, Skylab, and Made the Shuttle Fleet and now they like scrounging for cash. So after the Shuttle is Retired in 2010 there new mission is to build a new multi-purpose capsule based craft. Bigger than the origanal moon craft and better and they will use resourses the have got already. Such as the shuttle design in main engines and SRB boosters and by 2018-2020 we could be flyin' to the moon. The main reason they havn't it the funding and taxes are their funding .

The first time we put men on the moon, we did it for almost no other reason than to beat the commies. After we beat them, we lost interest, because there was no compelling reason to go back there. That is about to change. Even the Chinese are already planning to send men to the moon, and it's not because they want bragging rights, it's because they know that the moon harbors vast quantities of 3He, an extremely valuable fuel for fusion power.
Addendum: Some morons still believe we never landed men on the moon. Have them explain how several retroreflector arrays have been placed there so that astronomers today bounce laser beams off of them.

They achieved their objective which was to get to the moon before the Russians and achieve a propaganda coup. They also found that there was bugger-all there, and there were no long-term plans or existing technology for any sort of space-station on the moon.

the money neede to get to the moon and abck woud be in the billions if not trillions of dollars. today there's not as much funding for nasa to do all the projects. heck they are so low that know the international space station is going to hte russian because nasa has no money and it already has been stretched to capacity.

Don't you read the Science news? They are going to build a permanent lunar base by 2020, part of their ongoing plans the send men to Mars and beyond. Isn't it exciting? Or do you just enjoy being a boring old cynic?

exactly cause they ain't ever been there. Obviously as you know there was the space race between America and Russia which resulted in America falsely claiming they had landed on the moon. And why didn't they go back all they years ago to build experimentation buildings for plants etc.? Also why has nothing been said of the space buggies which were used in the first moon landings? Because obviously they aren't there. (telescopes could prove or disprove this theory.) And they are talking of landing on mars in so much years. im pissing my self laughing.
