the more news articles im reading say that they are basically fighting over territory, like sunni militants entered shiite territory and are retaliating, so basically they are religious gangs. how stupid is this?

I am a Muslim, and I myself don't understand all the carnage between Shias and Sunnis in Iraq. Actually, it is known in the Arab world that Sunnis are percieved to be more superior than Shias, and often ruled them. And that the Sunnis are the true inheritors of Islam. The things we are seeing in Iraq are extremely deep rooted, and the US just can't handle it.

The Muslim divide began after questions as to who should succeed the Prophet Mohamad (PBUH). Muslims voted for two different leaders, and as a result, Sunni Shia have emerged.

Every religion discourages differentiations in ethnicity or religious origin. The things seen in Iraq in the name of Islam are the greatest of all sins. I hate this Shia Sunni thingy. Its stupid.

They are to different branches of Islam and they like catholics and Protestantism don't like each other much. Iraq really shouldn't exist its a country made up by the British after world war 1. really it should be 2 or 3 separate states and may become them depending on how this war goes after America leaves. the only reason they where not fighting before when America invaded is cos Saddam managed to keep the Shiites under control and stop any main stream fighting.

Sunnis and Shiites are the two "major" factions within the religion of Islam.
Each claims their own rights to whom and how a successor of prophet Mohamed should have been and or is.
The Sunnis are the minority (in numbers)

Power...the sunnis are a minority and want more power or total control of the gov't....as does the shiites.
And the only way they know how to do it is by fear.
Some speculate that it's foriegn terror groups claiming to be the parties involved to ignite a civil war that no one can handle.
Others believe that the U.S. backed militias have become death squads....but in that country stealing uniforms and making them are easy and can be used to manipulate the idea.
Right now it's a media war...to see who can get the most media coverage for their cause.

cause america are fueling the civil war by stayin in iraq....as soon as america leaves....the violence will ease off and eventually stop!!! the sunni vs shiite war is to kick the americans out of iraq and to show that america doesnt have control of iraq....its sad that innocent ppl have to be killed because of the greed of 1 man(bush) and his dirty lil supporters!!!! oh well what goes around always comes around doesnt it.....guess its about time it came around to america!!!!

I think that is a good question. I would also like to point out how long they have been fighting....for hundreds of years. The U.S. did not cause a civil war....we interrupted it.
