Elton John by far. Billy Joel has yet to have the career that Elton has had. They don't even belong in the same category.

I prefer Elton, but Billy has equal merits. Elton only writes the music while Billy does both music & lyrics. Elton has been much more successful (sales wise) of the two but Billy has given him a run for his money....

Sir Elton is my piano man! But Billy is good, too. I've seen them together in concert, it was fantastic!

There's no such thing as "better" in this situation. I'm sure each has followers who prefer them over the other. They're both formidable talents. Both monsters... Elton sings great, plays great, and writes great melodies. Billy sings fine, plays fine, has written great tunes (both lyrics and music)... So... They're both really fantastic musicmakers. Try liking BOTH of them. I do!
