Me too, I see those words when I'm browsing the net.

A blog is basically a page on which you, as yourself, can write your life, may it be happy or sad. You control the page's content (to a certain extent, depending on the host's terms) and you can call it your own. You make a profile, write your name or a nickname, upload a pic a few more, maybe add a song playing in the background, and BAM, you're ready to write your first blog entry. You can say what happened today, or write some emo poetry, or share some philosophical thought on life, or whatever. Then, other people can access your page, read what you wrote, and post comments.

For the safety : it depends on what type of "safe" your enquiry is about.
Those web pages are mostly hosted by trusted websites (yahoo, blogger, etc) and there is just about no risk of getting anything bad viewing them. With the new security features on up-to-date bowsers, it is very unlikely that you get infected by a virus or stuff like that just by *viewing* any web page anyway.
On the other hand, the information safety is different. Anyone can write anything and anyone can see it. So if you have your own, it's logical that you don't want to post personal information there.

Well, I hope you are a total newb, 'cause otherwise this is all spoiled pixels ^_^

Cheers matey

A place for people to waste space on the internet really. What happens is that people take every stupid thought they have and write it down. No, I don't have my own blog, I am not a narcissist. It is a HUGE waste of human potential and effort and will likely cause the downfall of the internet. For the most part, they are safe because the people that use them are either 14 year old girls, or 55 year old men and can't program a virus worth a darn. Kinda creepy when you think about it. Keep America safe, END BLOGS NOW.

Blogs are simply online journals where authors (or "bloggers") post random thoughts, views, news, comments, and philosophies and may be updated regularly and are available for public viewing.

Well, that was entirely true before.

Now, blogs are used and abused by spammers, scammers or businesses whose sole aim is to gain top search engine ranking.

*Tidbit: Blogspot, Blog-City, etc. are just some of the sites where you can set up your own blogs for free.
