Mostly I am a comedy writer, I consider myself pretty good at it; but I have an idea for a story that would be a little distasteful as a comedy, so I guess it's drama time for me.
I want to know if there are any tips for writing a good dramatic story (movie or play I think) aside from just the rules of plot structure.

I have read a ton of bad screenplays (I used to be a reader for a company) so I know they can be pretty hard to do well.

I've taken writing classes in the past: those things are useless.
I would prefer written sources (online, books, whatever) if you might.

They say that comedy is the same as drama (except for the laughing).

With comedy, the character flaws are overy illustrated, and serve only to make a character exist.

With drama, the flaw is not the major factor for why the character exists. We do not want the reader to laugh at the flaw, we want the reader to feel compasion for the character's struggles and we begin to understand why it is a hinderance to the development of the character.

You also need to have a tug-of-war match between two or more characters. When you have given us reason to care for their points of view, then the tug-of-war match becomes the drama.

As an avid movie-goer, and drama film lover...I can tell you, what really draws me in...is originality of what's being said...saying something that's been said over and over, but in a unique almost poetic, yet honest way. And, having all the roles be strong characters...with lots of individual yet subtle traits. That might be hard to write and this answer probably sucks. If you approach the drama as art, as opposed to a movie. That's all I got :/
