If your cat or dog takes an instant dislike to someone (that you've just met), are you leary of that person?

We used to have a dog who would always freak out when a certain guy, who was a friend of the family, would come over. There was nothing wrong with him, but he bore a resemblance to her previous owner, who abused her. It's not always that person's fault. Dogs have prejudices and preferences, just like people. I've heard of racist dogs who always responded negatively to black people (usually as learned response from a past racist owner). That said, dogs also have a receptiveness to certain aspects of a person that we may not, and it's a good idea to pay attention to any negative reactions. See if you can figure out why, and keep an eye on said person.

Oh yes... my dog is the sweetiest thing ever and in the 2 years that I have had her there has only been 2 people that she would not allow near her or the kids... I definatly keep a closer eye on that person. Animals can pick up on things that we can't, it's good to pay attention.

my dog lobo, is a truckers companion. and he was raised on a truck and in turn is used to meeting countless numbers of people. most of the time he is pretty tolerant of who he associates with. i know him and when you are in this line of work you learn to trust you dog. he also acts like a security system. especially when we go into some dangerous places. when he has a bad reaction to someone and lets me know. i will listen to him, and watch that person he is alerting me about.
they have a sense of trouble that is unmatched to anything else that i have encountered.
yes i am very leary of that person. you can't be to carefull as to who to trust.

Only if my dog/cat is usually real social with strangers. Now, some animals are leary of all strangers, especially if you are, they'll feed off of your doubt.

Yes they can be a better judge of character than myself. My mothers dog does that. It's pretty weird. He will curl his lips and show his teeth to very few people that he just meets. Most of the time he is the gentle giant. Is it something that the sense?

Absolutely, normally my dogs love everyone.
There have been a few exceptions, with people wandering onto the property and the dogs chasing them off.
