Human beings have inborn fear of many things, death included. So they hold back , not wanting to risk anything in life .Thus , over a period of time they become mere " applauders " of others who venture out and do daring things. Still, their urge to take a chance , here and there, comes out often. I have seen even now persons hesitating to get onto a moving escalator. They dance at the entry people ... to go or not to go!

One of the strong urges, to take a chance, comes from similar vascillating individuals ." If he can make it , I can , too" philosophy. They come out not enjoying but have come out unscathed. It is not exactly a torture but a kind of self endurance test.

It is such curiosity have made men achieve great things too. Everest, fly across the world, daring magic... all are part of this drama.

Roller Coaster rides are closer related to rock concerts than torture. Roller coasters get the adrenaline flowing through fear, and concerts get it going because of how loud the noise is. Many people find adrenaline exciting and pleasureable.

People who want torture, on the other hand, are known as masochists, and its something psycological.
