Babies are so funny!!! I like what James said above...its probably that he discovered he can do that and he is noticing he can make those things down there move! its good that he goes to sleep like that too...my son was such a light sleeper we had to put him on his tummy so he could sleep because he would be moving around his arms as he was dozing off to sleep and we think it would scare him because he would be wide awake after he hit his face. my nephew will swing one of his legs side to side as he is laying in bed while you sing him a lullaby, when you finish and say goodnight to him he stops moving his leg and says "gain" (trying to say again) and if you sing some more he will move his leg again, side to side until you stop. so cute!! your son just has a quirk that you will get to tell his prom date later on in life and embarass him about most likely. if you are really concerned call his pediatrician because they will let you know for sure if it is nothing to worry about!

NO. Please do not contact CPS on a "feeling". You could ruin this childs/mothers life on an incorrect hunch. Continue to be vigilant and observant but nothing else. They will have asessed the injury at the hospital and looked closely for signs of abuse that you would not see anyway, and now the injury is on record. Contact authorities by all means if you really do observe something, otherwise stay out of it. Getting authorities involved on hunches, feelings, and senses makes you look like a nut, quite frankly, and is an abuse of our legal system. Imagine if every person did everything on a hunch. It is possible for young infants to sustain injuries of this sort, in fact sometimes more serious illnesses are diagnosed because of unusual patterns of injury. Innocent parents have been accused of abuse when their child has another underlying condition unknown to them. Children have even been diagnosed with osteoporosis.

That seems like quite the effort for such a little one. Perhaps its just his way of getting comfy? It won't ever hurt to ask your pediatrician about it. At this point I'm sure you'll be seeing him/her soon so, talk about it. There are no dumb questions so don't be shy about bring it up. I sure would!
Good luck
=)

Babies at this age is unable to control their legs. And they probably still trying to figure out how to control and at the same time, having fun with it. 4 months old should be the time they "discover" about their legs and start playing with them....

Just his way going to sleep, my son use to bang his head before he fell asleep, that is how we knew he was tired. I thought he was getting mad at himself for feeling tired and he would do it. He didn't do it hard, but noticed able.

Babies do strange things, but I've seen similar behavor in other babies and its quite normal. Dont get so worried. He'll stop eventually and devise another habit.

It's just comforting to him. He'll stop as he gets older. The little girl I nanny for used to do that.

well babies are weird. my sister used to wiggle her entire body before she fell asleep. i rub my tummy before i drift off. everyone does something like that. maybe your baby finds that this calms him and relaxes him. just check to make sure he's not hurting his legs by pounding them. babies are still fragile

Why? No, but mine did the same thing.
I think they do these things simply because they can.
"...Wow! My legs move! .... I'll make my legs move!"
(perhaps they are stretching before they snooze?)
