A pick up band refers to when an artist (Usually a vocalist, but not always) needs a temporary band for a limited numbers of dates. He will get in touch with the local musicians and "Pick Up" the musicians he wants for the job. It also could refer to a group of musicians who get together and play, just for the hell of it.
