I am reading A Christmas Carol for a school assignment.

I am asked the question, "Scrooge asks, "if...these are shadows of the things that will be or are they shadows of things that may be..."

why is that a significant question.

I think it's because Scrooge has been shown that there is a chance he can alter his life and essentially prevent his death from occuring the way it is.

Is this correct? What do you think?

He has only been shown a vision which would (since he is alive) appear to be the future. He can't know that it is or is not pre-ordained and that's why he asks. He asks because (a) he's shewd and sees a possible loophole and (b) he may have just begun his turnabout. As you say, he does see a chance to turn things around (I just don't think it was given to him...he could have just gone along with the way things were - there was nothing the ghost showed him that compelled him to change his ways)

At least that's how I see it. Good luck.

Good job! I'm glad you weren't trying to milk us for answers without having attempted it yourself.

Basically scrooge is asking if what he's being shown is the way things are destined to turn out or if he can change the events by changing his own actions.

Keep up the good work!
