In the 1940's the United States was fighting World War II. As more and more men were called up to fight, factories needed to find workers to fill the jobs that they left. In this way, many jobs opened up to women. For the first time in US history, many women worked in heavy industry. They worked as welders, riveters, autoworkers, machinists, electricians, shipbuilders, and plane builders. If you haven't learned about Rosie the Riveter, you might be interested in doing a little research to find out about Rosie. Women also took over other jobs including bus driver, cable car driver, miner, and postal worker. By now, about 45% of women were employed.

5 After the war, many people expected women to give up their jobs. They felt that the jobs should go to the men returning from war. So, by the 1950's, there were fewer women working, and fewer jobs remained open to women. In the 1950's women were encouraged to stay at home and keep house.

There was more need for secretaries, receptionist and support work. Typing pools in big offices mainly women typing letters, contracts, things that computers generate now. Presently, the computer has truly reduced that kind of work.
