I baby sit a 9 month old. She has formula feeds as well as solids. She is happy to eat veges all day but when it comes to her bottles i struggle. She is in a pretty good routine but when it comes to her bottle she clamps her mouth shut and wont take it. i have to hold her with the bottle on her lips until she SCREAMS for me to let her go and then shove it in. After a few more screams she is fine and drinks the whole bottle. She is not old enought just to eat solids. What should i do?

I have talked to parents, but they said to do what i like just get her to have her milk. She is still not even holding her own bottle so its a bit hard to give her a sippy cup.

that sounds like my kid...sh drinks some milk then clamps it shut...doesnt scream for me to go just moves and fidgets...
i figured a trick to kep her drinking
1. i give her my finger in my motuh...by reflex she looks for something to bite on since she's teething...and when she opned her mouth i put the bottle in quick and she takes it =) if she doesnt then too, then i give up...not force feed coz she can hate it more.
2. while shes drinking, give her something to hold..bottle cap works.....the longer she is palying with that, the loner the bottle will stay in her mouth =)
That works for me, good luck to you.

I believe you should take her off the bottle.
My lesson:
My daughter got on the bottle at 15 months because the baby sitter (my mom) couldnt put her to sleep when I wasnt around. She was already weened and eating baby food.
The Consequence: She got 4 root canals at the age of 2 because the sugar in the milk given by the bottle rotted her teeth. There was nothing I could do.
So She is ready to eat solids, let her. Just make sure the food is very small so that she wont choke. And use a sippy cup instead of a bottle.

Do NOT force her to take it. Simply wait until she asks for it, or wait 15-20 minutes and offer again. Also, maybe she REALLY does not want the bottle, try using a sippy cup,if she takes then GREAT she is ready to move on. Some children get tired of the bottle on their own and want a cup EVEN WHEN they cannot say so. One of my sons threw his bottle in the trash when he was 10 months old and brought me a cup to give him, so maybe she is tired of the bottle and is ready for a cup. Either way DO NOT FORCE IT!!

She is most likely lying, if the baby doesn't do it in front of others then it's not true, and most babies can not do any of that stuff. Although I do know a little boy who was potty trained by 12 months old (started at about 10 months old) and he talked really well, and could walk well by 7 months old. But he's a genius kid and he did it in front of others so we new his parents weren't lying. The things you described def. are not typical at all for a 9 month old.

Why haven't you discussed this with the mother? As a parent I know I would not like to find out that someone had been "force feeding" my child and torturing her to eat. You need to discuss EVERY problem you have with the child with the child's mother before YOU take any action.

hi welcome to the wonderful world of hmm... independents maybe the child is not thirsty i would wait 20 min before as u said stuffing the bottle into her mouth why put yourself up for the struggle and heart ache? the child at 9 months old is old enough to know when she is thirsty so just try it once my way and see if you don't make your life a little easier worked for my 11 month old grandson . good luck !!

She just trying to exercise her own personal will! It sounds like you know what you're doing. You have to keep giving the bottle to her.

You aren't supposed to FORCE FEED a kid!!! If she doesn't want it, try again a little while later!! NEVER FORCE FEED. OVER FEEDING A CHILD CAN MAKE THEM IRRITABLE AND SICK.
