Once upon a time, HPT's did not exist. (What people like us did in their spare time we may never know.)

To determine if a woman was pregnant, her urine was injected into a (female) rabbit. If the woman's urine contained hCG, the rabbit's ovaries would react by producing little pockets of blood. (These were harmless to the rabbit.)

Unfortunately, this was in the day before see-through rabbits, so the only way to see the ovaries was to kill the rabbit, cut her open, and peek inside. So, the rabbit actually died whether or not the woman was pregnant.

Somewhere along the line that little detail was lost, however, and "the rabbit died" became slang for "being pregnant."

Yeah, I know you probably read this on PeeOnAStick, too, Butterfly ... but I have NEVER heard of this before.

For everyone else, it's at http://www.peeonastick.com/hptfaq.html#17

Sorry, delicateharmony ... it's not mine.

It's at the link I gave.

But Meg (the woman who wrote it) is supposed to be incredibly nice ... so try emailing her to ask. ; )

slightly different than what i read. from what i read was the rabbit ended up dying no matter what from the urine injection.

when i read this story after finding out i was pregnant i asked my great-grandma if she ever heard the term the rabbit died. she didn't and it sort of sucked cuz i assumed she would have since her age and all. so it ruined my plan on telling her i was pregnant.

I have heard of this... learned it in class at some point in my education.

And the scary part is... I'm a single guy...

Strange our educational systems...

And I'd like to add - the way you wrote that up is absolutely splendid - I would love to have your permission to copy your text.

Thanks,

-dh

i've heard of this.. i read it in a book called "why do men fall asleep after sex" from the authors of "why do men have nipples". they answer random medical questions on just about every subject. but i've never heard of it before then.
