What do you hope to get out of reading fiction?

Fiction feeds the flame of imagination. When we despair it can take us up and out of our lives, to happier times; when we are joyful it can provoke empathy to inspire us to aid others. Literature can expose us to the best and worst that is possible, and allow us the luxury of closing the cover and walking away unscathed.

It depends on the fiction. In an airplane, then I'm just looking for distraction until I land. At home, I like to find a book that offers a true description of some aspect of the "human condition". There are a couple of books you might want to check out:

From reading fiction, first of all, I'd acquire enjoyment from the author's unique style of writing, then, I learn from those characters on how they talk back, react, express emotions, negotiate ideas, etc. like everyday people do. The last should be something about its literary qualities regarding its magnificent words or expressions I can apply later in my written or spoken English.

I expect an interesting world, understandable characters that I can identify with, the presentation of problems that seem realistic [especially when the setting is not realistic], foreshadowing of possible solutions, suprizes, betrayals, plot twists, satisfying vengeance, ironic justice, possible set-up for the sequel, and resolution of the problems.
