I'm planning a trip to Utah in 1 month and am going to snowboard at Snowbird and Brighton or Solitude, want to spent 2 days at Snowbird and I was wondering if the powder is really as light and dry as they advertise it to be? I'm from the east, so I'm sure i'll be blown away by riding out west, but I'm still not understanding how one regions snow is lighter and fluffier than anothers?

The powder is generally light, unless it's unusually warm or wet. I live in Utah and the climate is dry, dry, dry, so there isn't any moisture in the air like in many other places, so the snow stays dry. But it's definantly not like the commercials. The snow is still heavy. It's not like the airy feel they describe. But, it is amazing to board on and it's a once in a lifetime experience. The reason that it's fluffier and lighte is because the mountains in Utah and Colorado are a lot higher than those in the East. The climate of these regions is also more arid, dry and drought, so the snow isn't fighting with a wet ground or anything like that so it's just generally lighter. I live in Maryland too (divorced parents) and I can't snowboard here because the snow isn't as good, I learned on the best. Snowbird is the best resort for all that powder. It's so much fun there and it's definanlty a boarding resort. But Solitude is amazing, small and there are so many great runs. Brighton is another pretty boarder friendly resort, and they have night skiing so you can stay late.

Yeah dude the snow is light and dry. I am from Utah and grew up skiing there. the snow is so light because of all the salt in the air from the great salt lake. this isn't the only reason its so dry but it helps a bunch. it is also higher than out east so it is a different type of snow than you are used to. you are going to love it.
if you are a skiier you may want to check out Alta. if you are a boarder you won't be able to go to alta but be sure to check out brighton. they have a lot to offer snowboarders.
enjoy man

its lighter then the east but not as light as you see on the ads the change happens because the mountains out west are higher and the air is thinner and humidity is different air quality is better

skiing and boarding in the east we have ice mixed in the west is powder snow which is like the snow we in the east have when the mountains first open but once the trails are used afew times its gone

It is the lightest snow I have ever seen. Very dry. Almost TOO dry cuz it is not so floaty.
