The short answer would be - practice.

To aid you in this, however, I would recommend finding or making the surrounding area as quiet as possible. Maybe do some stretching just beforehand to relieve stress, as stress can make it hard to sit still. Avoid excess caffeine - or any excess stimulants, for that matter. Read/study for no more that 15-20 minutes at a time before taking a 5 minute break to stretch, walk around, veg in front of the TV - briefly - or step outside for some fresh air. As you develop your ability to concentrate, you can study for longer periods, but never go more than about 40 - 50 mins without taking a break. And the break should be 10 mins when studying for longer periods between breaks. I usually study about an hour and then take a 10 min break. Doing this, I have studied for as many as 10 hours straight. With a longer break for a meal or two. Tests in college will require that from time to time.

Getting a good nights sleep - every night - makes a huge difference. Same for eating on a regular basis and eating good food. If you're always tired or hungry, you won't be able to concentrate much at all. And drink lots of water. Just cause it's healthy!

Hope this helps!

Anything else you need to get done, take care of those before. Get rid of any distractions. Turn off the TV. Close the blinds. Turn off your cell phone. When you read, read out loud. After every sentence, close your eyes and ask yourself what you just read.

All of the above and chewing gum. Weird, but it works. It is rythmic and your brain works well on it. It's true!!
