Bought my 2001 Chrysler Voyager only 5 months ago, haven't even done 10,000 kms in it and it ground to a halt during a trip interstate..mechanic has found metal filings in the transmission, the fluid was still a nice pinky red colour, so not cooked, but definetely in big trouble! I am wondering if anyone has heard that these Voyagers have a problem with the transmission??? Quotes for a reconditioned transmission is from $2500 to $7000, a new one $7000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NOT happy Jan! The dealers are saying their extended warranty will only honour repairs upto $1700. Any ideas how to fight this one??

Did it come to a complete stop, or just slow down very slow like it was stuck in first gear? Most problems with the transmissions in 2001 were fixed without replacing or rebuilding the transmission.

If it slowed down to first gear speeds, it is likely the transmission controller (computer), could also be input and output speed sensors. Both of these were very common items to replace.
The default mode is it will stay in first gear to get you where you're going or to the nearest shop when it has a problem, so if something happens, it will slow way down to the default (top speed of about 15 or 20 mph).

The shop that told you about the metal filings, was this a dealer (Dodge or Chrysler, not used car dealer), independent shop or a trans shop? Trans shops are notorious for trying to scare you into buying a rebuild for your trans, or a remanufactured unit to put in when it doesn't really need it.

If it was a dealer, and another is close by, take it for a second opinion, if no other is close by, take it to an independent shop that has a good reputation to get a second opinion.
