There are practical reasons for this. In the market place women are willing to work for less than men, particularly if it is a second income. A woman may being willing to take a job for $25,000 while a man might not be willing to work for less than $30,000. If it is a position that can be filled by either gender, most employers will higher all women at the lower wage. There will be exceptions based on experience.

Women voluntarily remove themselves from the workplace or take jobs with less demand on their time in order to have families.
This does alter earning power when they return to work.

Since colleges are now majority female students, there will be a gradual change over the next couple decades to even things up.
