Each row and column must appear only 1 number. (from 1 to 9)
Each square(the 9 number-square) must appear only 1 number. If you have a duplicate number, the whole Sudoku will be wrong. So, if you are solving sudoku, use pencil cos you can rub away wrong numbers.

First, I go through each box and pencil in what the possible answers are.
Then, I go through each 3X3 square and figure out whether any digit can only occur in one possible place in that square, or if any square only has one realistic answer. Then I do the same thing with each horizontal line, and each vertical line. Repeat the process, whittling it down until you've solved it or you want to beat your head bloody on the table.

All there is to it is having 1-9 in every row, column, and box. Once you get the hang of it it's really fun and easy.
