To be honest, I really don't even want to think about any "erotica" that's written today. I find most older stuff is more interesting--usually it has some kind of point to it (however obscured that point is), it's not just erotic for the sake of being erotic. Or, at least it's a bit more like literature rather than porn or something.
I haven't read Anais Nin (as someone mentioned), but I've heard about her before--and I've only heard praise.
I believe it was Orwell that praised Henry Miller's "Tropic of Cancer" as one of the greatest books he's ever read... or something like that. Yes, it's erotica, too.
Also, well, "Venus in Furs", for example, while totally off the beaten path, is weird/funny. It's "erotica" that doesn't explicitly mention sex at all (though it is about a male masochist, which isn't for everyone!).
Nabokov's "Lolita" is literature (and fantastic literature, at that), but it's very steamy in parts (although no sex, either). Again, it's also sickening, because it's about an older male and a 12 year old.
You could also look through Playboy's list of the 25 sexiest books--some aren't erotica ("Lolita"), and some are really perverse ("Story of the Eye"), but overall I found it kind of funny to look through: http://www.playboy.com/sex/features/25novels/ Or check here: http://ilx.wh3rd.net/thread.php?msgid=7023487 if flashing pictures of barely nude women isn't your thing.
You can also look through this librarything group to find more stuff: http://www.librarything.com/groups/erotica

I never really read erotica after growing out of the hormonal stage but I know that one of the best erotic books ever written was Delta of Venus by Anais Nin.
Cheers.

Personally I don't read the erotica genre, but I like trashy romance novels. Nora Roberts is a wonderful author and has tons of titles to choose from.
