Empathy is important for our society because it is what facilitates our interactions and our connections to the other people around us. Empathy is a foundation for building a thriving and supportive community.
Why is it important for individuals to feel empathy? Because with out that sense of connection, with out that ability to consider other peoples views or feelings (or place ourselves in other peoples situations)... we'd all essentially have anti-social personality disorder (granted at that point it would be normal and not a disorder).
Having empathy is not necessarily always giving in to the communual good and completly negating personal goals, dreams, feelings, or gains. More it plays out in the consideration of other people when making decisions.
If you're interested in studying connections and how people form them. Durkheim is a sociological theorist who talks about the motivations behind communities. On a more individual lever Rogerian humanitarian psychology also looks as empathy.

Empathy is a form of compassion and it is important because otherwise you could care less about what others are going through. When you can directly relate to something someone is going through, it will sometimes give you a drive and motivation to help that person especially if what you went through was a traumatic event for you. You cannot just sit back and watch someone else go through it and possibly have the same outcome as you.
We desperately need more people to be compassionate in this society because although the US is a powerhouse globally,we are also viewed by other countries as very selfish and wasteful and those are some important reasons as to why we are so hated.

It is important in building relationships and understanding other people. It makes us very human when we empathise. It is very important in society because when we can't see where other people are coming from, conflict surely follows more quickly than if we take time to step into their shoes and THEN consider if their actions or words are warranted. Studies on babies in nurseries show that they cry when another cries even when nothing is wrong out of empathy which suggests that it is an innate quality but also something that can be worked on throughout life. Yawning when you see another person yawn is emapthy and I read that sociopaths aren't affected by seeing it because they lack empathy.

The alternative to practicing empathy (whenever possible & applicable) is chaos, hatred & violence, which most humans don't want. Empathy is how we survive birth & growing up in an infantile form so completely helpless that we can't even feed ourselves or clean ourselves. Without empathy, humans would dissappear very quickly from the world. Empathy is where maturity leads, away from the fear & anger-based responses of our reptilian past (and our teenage years) to a place of identification with the other as ourself, fearless, love-based & an essential stage in the path to freedom.
Peace,
;-)

Empathy is the ability to understand and feel what someone is going through during a difficult time.
For example...If your friends father passed away, you would offer empathy if your father also passed away. You can relate to his or her pain, because you too lost your father.
If your father was still alive, and your friends father passed away, you then offer sympathy. You can only imagine what your friend is going through, since you have not had to deal with losing your father.
Hope this helps.

What is it like for the male gender? Well currently it sucks because the feminists are oppressing us and harrassing us and trying to make life very hard for us and trying to take revenge from us. Its sad how the society is giving into the feminists and expecting us to enjoy getting battered by the feminists. Its like they're converting us into masochists. There's no such thing as the male role and female role now because the some women are like men with vaginas and They also wear a lot of strap-ons and so the male role is being improvised. We don't want anything to empower us - if the feminists stopped sleeping with the Law and screwing us over that'll be more than enough empowerment. I hope I appeased your curiosity. BDW did you finally figure out why Asian women have hairy bushes? I think you're the one who asked

Empathy allows an individual to sense (hopefully before they say or do something) how a comment or action could be hurtful to another. This, of course, lessens provocation that could lead to physical encounters. It also allows you to consider the "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" philosophy. Hopefully, treat others with respect, and respect will likewise be shown in return.
