I'm looking for a restaurant on a high floor with big windows; something that has a great view overlooking the city at night, and isn't crazy expensive or too modern. ??? help please.

I really don't care if its expensive, but I don't want my date to feel uncomfortable, and I think a really formal or really modern place would do that.

Well, it only offers drinks and appetizers, but "The View" lounge on the 39th Floor of the Marriott on 4th Street fits the rest of your requirements.
For an actual restaurant, the Carnelian Room on the 52 floor of the Bank of America building on California has the view you are looking for, but unfortunately, it is fairly expensive. Most of the other top-of-the-skyscraper restaurants are going to fall into the same boat, high prices and mediocre food. It's pretty hard for a reasonably priced restaurant to be able to afford the high rents of the big skyscrapers in the financial district or similar areas.
My suggestion would be to have drinks and appetizers at the Marriott to enjoy the view, then go to another restaurant to have a great meal. I did that for my last birthday and had a fabulous time.

Cheesecake Factory is nice..However, there are hardly any tables with views and its only a view of Union Square.
If you are not worried about the expense then I would suggest The Equinox. Its a rotating restaurant at the top of the Hyatt. Their food is great and every table is a window seat.

I agree with the Cheesecake Factory on top of the Macy's building in Union Square. Also, the Equinox at the Pier is great. Isabellas at the Pier is also an excellent restaurant (u have to get the Clam Chowder in the bread bowl, absolutely delicious.)

considered one of my favorites close to Union sq. is Postrio on placed up highway. it fairly is a definite place. I even have under no circumstances had a holiday dinner there. I even have discovered that Cliff house is puffed up different than for the putting and look at. you will possibly not get the superb table.
