Great question. He needs to play longer before he can be fairly compared to the all-time greats (you missed Jim Brown by the way).

That being said, on his current pace and his level of talent, he may be regarded within the ultra-elites of NFL running back history.

He catches the ball better as well as anyone.

He blocks.

He throws for touchdowns.

Oh yeah, he scores touchdowns like crazy too.

I think Barry Sanders, Jim Brown and Gale Sayers are probably the only naturally more talented running backs to have played the game than Tomlinson.

Tomlinson may outshine them all and the overachieving running backs as well - (guys that got by on heart, toughness and smarts - Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, etc).

It will be interesting to see how far he goes.

LT is by far and away the best RB in football right now.
He'll have to produce for the next 5 years in order to jump into the level of the RB's you mentioned.

Barry Sanders is the best RB I've ever seen. Sanders gained over 15,000 yards in 10 years on bad Detroit Lions teams.
If LT continues on the pace that he's at over the next 5-8 years, it'll be almost impossible not to call him the best RB ever.

Right now, I'd put him on a level with Sayers, only because his career isn't as long as people like Sanders or Payton.

But, give him 5 more years, and he will be mentioned in the same breath as Payton and Sanders (and relegate Emmitt Smith to the sidelines where he should be, for if there was ever a running back who wouldn't have done crap if it weren't for his offensive line, it's Emmitt).

He's pretty good,.. but I think its also a tribute to a good o line, and a great lead blocker,... look at how many 1000 yard rushers his FB has blocked for in his career who had less success elsewhere in the league,..

sometimes, its not just the back,. its the supporting cast,.. look at how terrible james is doing in arizona this year as compared to indy

barry sanders was the best,.. ever,. hands down,. no comparisons,.... LT doesn't move like sanders did,... and sanders played for a shitty detroit team that never wwent anywhere,.. and sanders didn't even need a fullbakc to do what he did...

Damn good.

And, he has broken many records this year and still have 3 games left. Also, for people the doubt his feats because of the longer season, remember that he has done it all in 13 games.
He is just a class act.

L.T is in a class of his own.

No other RB had the talent, smarts and class that L.T. has.

And he has not yet reached his prime!

Move over Brown, Sayers and Bo Jackson, too.

A running back is only as good as his offensive line. Without those guys making the holes, he wouldn't be going anywhere.

When he retires, hopefully not soon, he will be the best RB ever, and he is the best player in the league at this moment.

If you compare touchdowns made, at his current pace. He will be considered the best ever, at least until someone else comes along.
